As long as people have been on the planet, they have been producing waste but it wasn’t until the middle of the 18th Century that organized strategies for dealing with waste began to take shape. The first waste management system was established in London, England, where industrialization brought high population density and waste was literally piling up in the streets. At the time, though, waste management was less about cleanliness and health and more a way of collecting coal ash (or “dust”) that could be sold at a profit for brick-making purposes.

Eventually, waste management became focused on improving the health of Londoners who were suffering and dying from diseases like cholera due to poor sanitation. Sir Edwin Chadwick led the battle for waste management reforms and eventually, the Nuisance Removal and Disease Prevention Act of 1846 and the Public Health Act of 1875 were put in place. These and further reforms meant regulated clean up of the streets and sanitation were law. For the first time, households were required to use a receptacle for their waste and set it on the street for weekly pick up and incineration. And thus, garbage day was born. 

These early laws and systems cleared the way for the waste management systems we have today and we continue to improve them in order to reduce our impact on this planet. Today, Canada is adopting extensive recycling and composting programs in an effort to minimize the amount of waste that ends up in our over-extended landfills and create a sustainable waste management system that values reuse, recycling, and repurposing over disposal.

Recycling Junk

The best solution to landfill stress and sustainable waste management is to work on ways to recycle everything we can. From wood, metal, and paper, furniture, electronics, and plastics, virtually everything that isn’t perishable can be recycled today. These materials are then sold back to manufacturers who turn them into new products. What Is Hazardous Waste?

One of the greatest challenges to sustainable waste management, recycling and socially conscious junk removal is hazardous waste. Hazardous waste is regulated under the Federal Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) and the provincial New Brunswick Clean Environment Act. 

CEPA defines hazardous waste as chemicals, products, and byproducts that are potentially hazardous to the environment and human health. They may represent an immediate danger, such as ability to burn skin on contact, or longer-term environmental or human health risks due to accumulation and persistence of toxic substances in the environment.”

These items are banned from the landfill and cannot be picked up by municipal garbage collection or handled by a junk removal company. For the most part, an average household will have very little, if any hazardous waste. Hazardous items you may have include gasoline, batteries, sharps, pesticides, flea collars, medications, paint, and anything that is labelled as corrosive, explosive, flammable, or poisonous. 

Cleaning products, varnishes, motor oil (or other automotive fluids), pesticides, herbicides, and paints all qualify as hazardous waste and should not be thrown away in a trash bin or dumpster. Instead, they should be taken to a municipal or provincial hazardous waste handling facility near you.
